Monday will mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne, and plans are being put in place to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee year here in Leek.

The week, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has urged residents to get involved in an ambitious, nationwide beacon tribute.

The Government want at least six beacons per local authority to be lit on Monday, June 4, and if everything goes to plan, there will be a total of 2012 beacons lit across the country.

Neighbourhoods wanting to take part can contact the council's Terry Crawford at terry.crawford@staffsmoorlands.gov.uk to register their event on the national database, but this must be done by April 30.

Also in the pipeline for later in the year is a Diamond Jubilee exhibition at the Nicholson.

The exhibition will showcase the reigns of both Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria - the only other monarch to have celebrated 60 years on the throne.

The museum is appealing to residents who may have royal memorabilia from before 1960 or going back to 1897 to get in touch on 01538 483741, or by email, at nicholson@staffsmoorlands.gov.uk.
