A Sainsbury's spokesman has confirmed that all existing Churnet Works tenants have now signed up to their new premises, as demolition work on the site begins.

The tenants, including Roger Goodwin Pine Services, John Hall Furniture, Gaddum and Gaddum Limited and Elite Gaming, are expected to move into their new, purpose-built units in May.

Work has now started on the demolition of the old premises.

Sainsbury's project manager, Nick Alston, told the Sentinel: "We are delighted to confirm that all of the tenants that are remaining at the site have now signed up to their new premises."

"Many of these businesses are Leek through and through and it's a pleasure to be able to ensure they can continue trading locally in new and improved facilities," he continued.

"This is one of the first major benefits the Sainsbury's development will provide for Leek and its community, and we look forward to continuing our good progress with the regeneration of Churnet Works."

The controversial superstore is expected to create around 600 jobs when it is fully operational.
